1. Camping and Photography

    Camping and Photography - Chasing the sunset and dusting off the covid cobwebs. #solocamping #landscapephotography #naturephotography #photography #exploresumatra #indonesia #bengkulu #bengkulukota #bengkuluhitz

I took a solo trip to the port of Bengkulu (Pulau Baii) to hunt for some photos while waiting for the sun to set and solo camped overnight for the full experience. It was an incredible sunset in the afternoon sitting by the bay watching the fishing boats go past. The colors went from gold through to all the hues into the blue hour.

It’s been a while since I have been able to fully throw myself…

I just love the way this black and white of Bona prints on the Canon ImageProGraf Pro 500(1000). On beautiful lustre paper it truly shines. There is never anyhting more enjoyable as a photographer than watching your work come to life.

  4. Bona River Bath with Aswita

    Bona River Bath with Aswita

Bona in her early years was never wanting to be far from Aswita’s side. So when Bona gained the strength to swim she would always join her for bath time in the river. This photo is one of my favorites of Bona and it looks very nice in black and white.

I was wanting to take a good sunset shot at the beach this afternoon but it was a bit hard to ignore the trash piled up on the beach. I got my sunset shot but angled my camera towards the beach and took 50 photos of different pieces of trash within a 50 meter stretch of the beach. Look at this spectacular planet and the incredible views and life it provides us and look at how we treat it.

At what point do we say as a human race “Well that’s enough then, this has to stop”. Is it now? Tomorrow? Was it yesterday? Are we all just too late to stop this crazy take on life we have carved out for ourselves.

    31-DSC09220
Watching locals run around bare foot taking selfies in and around trash filled beaches in Sumatra just seems so sureal. Others enjoying a snack watching the sunset just a few feet from piles of trash. Just stop for a second and look at it from the outside, it is certainly within the realms of insanity.

Are we all that self obsessed that we chose to continue to ignore the obvious so we can feed our social media needs and ignore the real world around us. What a sad state we are in as an intelligent race. As Paul Watson once said “Intelligence is the ability of a species to live in harmony with its environment”. I agree. At least we should be trying a hell of a lot better to live in harmony with this planet.

Local fisherman on the coast of South Sumatra chance their luck on a rocky outcrop during morning fishing.

When you have been patiently awaiting the weather to turn for 3 days and the final morning the clouds are still not lifting and the light is still not breaking through, the thought process and creativity has to switch gears. I had gotten a few shots of Wayhawang Beach over the last few days with some nice long exposures under trying conditions and on my final morning there was no rain but once again too much cloud cover.

So I decided to focus my morning on creating some nice landscapes with the Mavic Pro partnered with the nisi mavic filters. The sunrise had not eventuated and the light was low enough along with the nd64 to try a bit of a long exposure using the Mavic Pro to try and capture the movement of the waves rolling in. I had never tried this before so it was a bit of an experiment. I flew the Mavic Pro into position and then switched to tripod mod in the hope that this would help steady the shot. I used manual settings in the dji app to get the exposure right and the longest I could manage was .5 of a second using the nd64 nisi filter.

    image

Personally I think the experiment worked out just fine and I am happy with the result from a drone at .5 second of exposure time. The exposure time really captured the movement of the waves and shows the drama as the fisherman attempt to make the catch.

I love how this new mobile workflow setup gives me so many options and it all fits into one handy backpack.

Planning is Key For the full image head to my blog > http://www.brucelevick.com/planning-is-key/

As always for the full image visit my website at the link above. For anyone wanting to use my images please contact me first.

Such a beautiful location of a somewhat untouched paradise under a towering waterfall, but surreal in a sense that this little paradise is surrounded by 100’s of square kilometers of oil palm plantations.

This is a good example of getting lucky but to be honest it is not the best photo I could have captured from this location and I will surely go back on my own time and get the right image.

This image is part of a job I am doing capturing the beauty that is Bengkulu for a calendar project. Unfortunately I am in the position now of mostly following along with someone else’s plans and there is not a lot of thought put into planning for each location leaving me sometimes with only 15 minutes per location to capture a calendar quality image.

This wouldn’t be so bad if these locations were not so difficult to get to. For example this location is a 5 hour drive, then 2 hours on an old motorbike through rough sometimes knee deep mud and then 1 hour traversing down a steep cliff side to get to the location. Then do it all again to return. This location I got lucky to have 1 hour total to capture a quality image. I’m not 100% happy with it and didn’t get the time to search for the best composition.

It is all about the planning and so important to give yourself the time to find the right image at the right time under the right light. To do that my minimum time would be to camp two days at this location. Set up the hammock and sleep next to the river. That is my plan for the next time and hopefully not have any other people making the “plans”.
